How Stupid Can People Be?

Well, they can be really stupid, obviously, but I just read something that really takes the cake. Rudy Giuliani has unveiled his master plan for carrying the Republican party Presidential nomination. You want to know what it is? Are you sure? It’s pretty darn dastardly. Okay, you have been warned, here it is:

Giulianni says that he is the best choice for the Republican party because he is the only one who can beat Hillary Clinton in the Presidential election. By unveiling this astounding strategy, and banking on the general hatred of the Clintons by most Republicans, Giuliani hopes to draw more support to his camp. His strategy, in a weird way, makes a lot of sense. After all, why would you not vote for the ONE person who can beat your most hated enemy, and I’ll give it to the guy, he is electable. Just ask New York City. Also, Giulianni hopes that by portraying himself as Clinton kryptonite, conservative Republicans will forgive his more liberal views on abortion, gun control, and divorce.

In a move to put his money where his mouth his, Giulianni spoke of Clinton as being part of the anti-war group that created the “General Betrayus” advertisement that appeated on moveon.org a little while ago. This is a brilliant move because in one swift stroke he has painted her as anti-military, and as someone who does not care about the troops or the war on terror, increasing conservative fears that she would be a weak and “ultra” liberal leader. Earlier this week President Bush was quoted as saying that he thinks Clinton will be the Democratic presidential candidate, which should help Giulianni garner more votes (that is if his strategy works at all).

I know politics are about politicking (especially during the presidential race), but I seriously think that someone who campaigns on the platform that they should be their party’s nominee because they can beat the other party’s nominee is ridiculous. What about the candidate’s stance on the issues? I want to hear Giulianni talk about what he would do about health care. I want him to explain why he thinks a pre-emptive nuclear strike against Iran would be a good idea. I want to know how he would handle the situation in Iraq. How would Rudy handle the education crisis facing our country right now? To me these are the important issues (and while I have yet to vote Republican, there is always a chance). It is not so important to me that my candidate says he or she can win, but that they get out there and earn the victory by staying focused on what is important to voters of both parties.

I would also like to know why Rudy thinks he can beat Clinton. The only other time he faced off agaisnt her was in the 2000 New York Senate race, and he had to drop out of that due to prostate concerns. But hey, he said he can beat her so that must be true, right? That’s reason enough to vote for him right?

  1. As much as I’d like to see a woman president, I don’t trust Hillary as far as I can throw her.
